Castle Railings, Ashtabula Harbor, OH., has moved to a larger space in the Harbor at 841 Morton Dr., tripling its size to keep up with increasing demand.

“The business continues growing,” owner Andrew Miller said. “We may at some point outgrow this location.”

Miller started Castle Railings in 2017 as a side job while working full-time in mechanical drafting.

“I started by doing a neighbor’s railing and then it just kind of spiraled from there,” he said. “Before you know it, I couldn’t work at my daytime job anymore, because it just got so, so busy.”

Castle Railings specializes in custom iron, steel and aluminum railings, offering handcrafted designs that can’t be found in stores. “They’re made for your steps and stairwells, and we can do a lot of different custom scrolls, ironwork, bending, things like that,” Miller said.

The company has completed projects for Cloven Hoof Brewery, Spire Academy and multiple century homes on Lake Avenue and Walnut Boulevard. “We’ve traveled as far as the east side of Cleveland,” Miller said. “We’ve also done some work at the Agora, for JCI.”

Miller said the move to the Harbor has been a welcome change. “Oh, it’s awesome,” he said. “Walking down the road here, we can go to lunch in the summertime, and being up on this hill, we’re going to get the breeze coming off the lake.”

Castle Railings was previously located on Columbus Avenue, and Miller said some customers are still adjusting to the move. “I have been getting calls like, ‘Did you guys go out of business?’” he said. “No, we haven’t gone, we just moved.”

Miller, who grew up in Jefferson, credits his drafting education at A-Tech for helping him build his business. He said he learned a lot of valuable AutoCAD experience from his instructor Ken Porter.

“That school’s a big opportunity, I think, for a lot of kids in Ashtabula County,” Miller said.

As for future plans, he said he hopes to expand operations to include in-house powder coating, which is currently outsourced.

“That’s going to be a little further down the line,” Miller said. “But with this business, the sky’s the limit.”
