As Hickory Dickory Decks nears saturation into every corner of Canada, the deck-building franchiser is finally ready to turn its sights on the United States.
“We’re almost sold out in Canada,” explained CEO Tom Jacques. “In three years, we won’t have any territories left. It’s time to go into the U.S.”
Over the years, Hickory Dickory Decks has had a handful of locations in the U.S. come and go, plus one—Alvin Smith in Bangor, ME.—who has remained affiliated for the last 17 years. But the company has never actively pursued builders outside of Canada. Until now.
This spring, the company signed brothers Nathan and Brinton Ricke of Middletown, OH., to open Hickory Dickory Decks Cincinnati. “As brothers with diverse backgrounds spanning paramedic work, landscaping and warehouse work, we’re passionate about building and caring for people. With a combined love for crafting beautiful decks, we chose to join Hickory Dickory Decks for its reputation and premium materials,” the Rickes said.
Active recruitment of additional stateside builders heats up this fall. Plans are to add 20 U.S. franchises in 2025.
According to Jacques, key to its expansion strategy is focusing on creating and maintaining strong relationships with new franchisees. This will include investment in marketing and branding initiatives, while providing the excellent support that they are known for to their network of franchise owners. Through these efforts, Hickory Dickory Decks is determined to become a leading and preferred choice for homeowners looking for quality designed and built low-maintenance decks.
The one primary difference with how U.S. franchise will operate is that in Canada, the builders purchase the bulk of their materials through the franchiser’s own supply company. Jacques expects the U.S. locations to be served through established U.S. supply chains and brands.
So far this year, Hickory Dickory Decks has signed on 20 new builders in Canada, bringing its total to 96 in North America. Its rapid growth has shot them past Archadeck Outdoor Living, which has about 66 franchises in the U.S., but only three in Canada.
“After more than 35 years in the decking industry, we are excited to embark on this new chapter and look forward to the journey ahead as we expand into the United States,” Jacques said. “This expansion underscores our commitment to global growth and our belief in the strength of the American market. We look forward to bringing our expertise, innovation, and dedication to excellence to serve customers in the U.S.”
