Extreme Makeover: Home Edition form lead designer Kim Lewis recently relocated her Peached Casita tiny house from South Austin to the Texas Hill Country, and added an expansive Kebony deck with a stock tank pool.
The tiny house, which Lewis has used as a home office during COVID, is two separate tiny homes totaling 560 sq. ft. placed in an L-shape with a breezeway connecting them. One section houses the bedroom and bathroom while the other has an eat-in kitchen and living area. When the Peached Casita was moved to the property it had an old composite deck that needed replacing. Lewis chose Kebony to re-deck the existing frame and add roughly 350 sq. ft. of decking around the stock tank pool. Kebony Clear Deck Board was used and features boards as long as 16 ft., which were run parallel to the house along both angles to provide a sleek, modern look.
The deck installers, led by Jack Harrison Construction, had several challenges to overcome when it came to the deck framing. The breezeway used steel framing to connect the two tiny homes, the existing framing required leveling and additional framing, including leveling the tiny house itself, and the new deck went over an area with the potential to flood, so concrete footings had to be dug into rocky terrain to guarantee the deck would never shift. For those reasons, the deck utilized three different Kebony fastener systems: Step-Clip for Kebony hidden-fastening strips on the existing frame; Fastenator hidden fasteners around the pool; and Kebony’s face-fastened Pro Plug System on the border and butt joints. The result was a quicker install and a smooth look between each of the areas of the deck.
“We also installed minimal 3” picture-frame ends on the deck and finished the front faces with 6” planks,” Lewis said. “But we didn’t finish it all the way to the ground, which gives the deck a floating feel.”
An 8’-diameter stock tank pool, sourced from Cowboy Pools of Austin, was set into the deck in the front, exposing the face of the aluminum tank. The decking was radius-cut using a plywood stencil to tightly accommodate the tank, and it was installed to slightly overlap the tank to make it comfortable for people to sit on the deck with their feet in the pool.
Lewis said they are finishing up the landscaping around the Peached Casita tiny house and it will soon be an Airbnb rental.
